As you know, my Buddy went to the rainbow bridge a couple of weeks ago.  In the interim I was emailed about a senior dog with cancer.  At first I ignored the e-mail.  Then I found myself going back to it and asking questions in "replies".  This dog was a dumpster dog.  (still not sure what that you)?  After making a million excuses why I cdnt take him on....I took him on,.  He came this past Monday.  He needs amputation of his front leg.  Sarcoma...aggressive cancer.  (hasn't spread yet per tests).  Do any of you guys have a three legged lil one?  Im very nervouos for him.  Mainly for the recuperation period.  (I have other dogs).  They all get along.  So far so good.  Hes not a pug.  Hes a golden mix.  Hes underweight and doesn't eat dog food.  Any suggestions appreciated!  Thanks.  Hope ure having a good Friday.  :-)

Dogs can get around well on three legs, so give him time, and he should be about move about

GOD bless you Karyn, for taking in your new friend!

I've been so busy since Vinny left me that I've not visited here to hear about the loss of your Buddy.  I can just picture Vinny showing him how to put on the climbing harness and scale a mountain peak.

Please send me an email so I can capture your address and send you a personal notification and invitation of my new projects.

I'm not an expert so I might be wrong, but I think its harder to balance without a front leg, but I'm sure he will still be able to get around.  Dogs and animals in general adapt very well.  I'd look up what kind of mechanical aids you might be able to get.

I wouldn't try radiation.  I looked into that when my big girl Sylvie got jaw cancer.  She was a very large black and white sheppard.  She was the best girl ever, but got a cancer that was very aggressive.  Its just too expensive, we would have had to go to the states, and there is no guarantee.  Unfortunately cancer is not a fun one to deal with.  All you can do is try your best and give them the best remaining time they can have.

Thanks for replying guys. it is the front legs that's important.  I always thought it was the rear legs.  Oh no.  Im so upset.  I just hope im doing the right thing.  The rescue agency is paying for it.  If I had the $$$ I would look into radiation.  I don't know.  Breaks my heart.  Thanks again.  Im going to look at the video/slides now.

I imagine a dumpster dog is one who has lived on the streets.  My Jake (non-pug) was sort of one of these.  All he can think of is food and I have to have all my garbage out of his reach or I have a mess all over the place.  But he is a great guy!

My pug Zoe slowly lost the use of her rear legs.  She still got around fine and was a happy girl!  She also lost an eye earlier, but again she never lost a beat.  I'm sure your three legged dog will be just fine.  The only problem is its the front leg.  I think thats a lot harder to get around than if it was a rear leg.  Harder to balance.

I just posted a link to a nice slide show and one of the slides has a small dog with both front legs missing. They made him a little contraption to get around.  I've seen dogs getting around in doggie wheel chairs when their rear legs go and they run and play just like they don't even realize there is a problem.

So I think your dog will get by without too many problems.  He will have you to help him out so he already is the luckiest dog around!!! :)

Hi Karyn,  Thanks for doing what you are doing.  I would believe that a "dumpster dog" is one that lived off the streets and ate what ever they could find.  As far as being a three legged dog, they get along just fine.  I don't have one, but I've read a lot about them.  Good luck!  Doc and Lexi
