Social network for pugs and their people.
Well we have had quite a weekend here at the Baker home. Last night as we were all heading to bed. James was in the process of putting the Pugstonians up on the bed one by one as he does every night. He must have been very tired because he and I both know Puga goes up last if the others, others being mainly the girls are in the room. Thus why I am typing this in pink...lol The reason being that the other jealous bitch's jump Puga everytime we pick her up or try and give her attention. Mainly Ginger and Pixie are the problems...imagine that???? So James forgets and picks up Puga and Ginger and Pixie go beserk and start barking and jumping and biting at Puga. Puga in turns fights back and ends up flipping out of James arms and onto her back on the floor. Poor thing was so upset and frightened she even had some poop escape. :(
When we assessed her she was holding up her back left leg and would not put any weight on it. It was just sort of hanging there all wobbly. Oh course Mr B freaks out as is his way. Thinks her leg is broke and we must take her to the ER vet. It is 11:30 at night. :( So off we go.
When we arrive Puga is panting heavily but has never whined or made a sound through the whole thing. We walk in the door and the first thing we hear is a woman wailing and crying out " OH MY BABY! OH MY BABY! Over and over and over. It is obvious that she has just lost her beloved pet and is in serious grief and meltdown. We get Puga checked in as the wailing continues from a back room somewhere in the bowls of the clinic. I can't take it. It is breaking my heart to hear this woman in such distress so I walk out side to wait where I can't hear her. Well it's hot and muggy so I don't last long out there and praying it is over I go back in. Nope still going on and on and on. Then the vet tech calls us into a room and tells us that yes she did just loose her dog a lab mix. She said the woman is feeling extremely guilty because while her house was being bomb for fleas they left the dog outside and the family went to eat. No clue how long it was outside but when they got home it was not well and brought it in. The dog later expired from heat stroke. It was just awful. :'(
Now on to Puga. They examine her and take an x-ray. All her vitals are normal and the x-ray reveals no break. The vet believes she must have damaged some nerves in the leg. So basically it is like the leg is paralyzed until they heal. Slim possibility that they might not but usually they do she says. So Puga gets a pain shot even though the vet said she really didn't appear to be in pain and Puga let her manipulate her leg without any fuss. She also receives an anti inflammatory to take every 12 hours starting when we got home. She was quite zonked out from the pain meds and didn't want any food or water when we got home. Had to force the pill down her....yeah fun :) We crated her for the night so she would be still and no one would bother her. She didn't care she was out if it. Come morning she was not acting right at all. Still not interested in food, water or going potty. All she would do is sit there like a zombie. James of course starts freaking out again. Do ya'll see a pattern here? I said maybe the pain meds have not worn off yet. He says they said it would wear off in 8 to 10 hours. It was 11:00am at this time. So I call the ER vet and tell them what she is and isn't doing. Of course they say bring her in. So off we go again. Luckily when we arrive there are no crisis taking place and all is calm. There is a new vet on duty and after examining her he says that all her vitals are good and he believes she just hasn't come out of the funk the pain meds put her in. Imagine that! He said she was a cheap drunk...LOL He did offer her some really nice stinky canned dog food which she politely refused. He said take her home and keep a close eye on her and if she doesn't improve or shows some signs of discomfort or vomits or has diarrhea bring her back.
So home we go. It is time for another anti inflammatory which I again must force down her. After she is thoroughly sniffed and inspected by the troops we settle down for a nice nap. Well she naps while I get on the computer. After about 1 1/2 hours she wakes up and is panting really hard. I take her to the water bowl and low and behold she drinks and drinks and drinks! There was one tiny piece of kibble left over from the Boston's breakfast which no one had discovered so I offer it to her and she eats it! I take this as a very good sign. I then take her to her food bowl and leave her there with food and water by herself to see what happens. I also put down a used bath towel knowing that if she has to go potty she will go on it if I wanted her to or not. After a few minutes I return. Food it all gone and there is a huge peepee on the bath towel!!!! Yippee!!!! Never thought I'd be happy for her to pee on a bath towel. She is also maneuvering about pretty well and putting some pressure on the leg. So things are looking good.
Will continue to update as warrants. But right now I am feeling good about her recovery. It's been a long night and day.
