Ok, so maybe I'm not the best at getting out on walks twice a day, and maybe Sangmu gets fed a lot of vegetable scraps. Despite these facts, I never thought that she would reach 20 pounds. We went to the vet for a check up a few months ago and when the nurse weighed her, she said, "oh my. Little Sangmu's twenty pounds! I'll make a note of that." Thats when I started to get worried. Her Vet told us that it probably wasn't a good idea for her to gain any more weight, and it definitely wasn't a bad idea to loose some. We walked her and decreased her food a little, and with in a matter of weeks she had lost two pounds. I was ecstatic.

However, a couple weeks ago, I weighed her at home and she was twenty pounds again. What happened?! I've been taking her for more walks again but she's already down to 1 cup of food per day so I don't want to reduce her meals anymore. We also found out a few days ago that Pema has reached the big 2-0 as well, and Karma is currently at 17. It's deffenetly time to have Sangmu and Pema go on Pug weight watchers and we don't want Karma to get as heavy a they are. Does any one have any tips about loosing weight or ideas about how the girls turned into pug sausages?

Well Paul, I'm looking and there aint no hourglass. A pork barrel maybe? Just confirms the diet I've already started her on :)

aaaaaaaa yes, Paul. I've heard that before and it might be the key.

Oh I was just thinking and this was a rule of thumb I have learned about pugs. If you look at them from an aerial view and you cant see an "hourglass" shape, its diet time.

Thank you all! Wait to go Brent! I think a tread mill might not be a bad idea, but I don't own one. High protein diet? That sounds interesting. Someone told me that since pugs have hip problems protein wasn't the best thing for them. However, I'm not sure that's true or even makes sense now that I think about it.

What food are you feeding Sangmu? The reduced calorie food is good and all, but I honestly will stand by a higher protein food over all others, think of it like an atkins diet for a pug, the fat that is there is more readily burned off. I guess I am lucky Guinness is super active and I noticed when he went to a higher protein diet he became more active. His treats are almost 100% protein. He's packing on the weight, but is far far from chunky or rotund. Hes at about 15lbs now, but if he stays at this pace will carry 20lbs on his frame easily and not look like a "sausage". I do get him out regularly and he does get about 6 miles worth of walking a day, and in reality with people or pugs, more frequent smaller meals and excersize will totally change body composition. Guinness may actually get more calories than most dogs and probably burns more than most also. He eats about 2.5 cups of high protein kibble a day and that is double what he should be getting per the bag.

Nope Brent, you are a good parent, it is all of us who are over feeding our mob. Mind you Hektor is looking forward to a bit of steak for his Birthday, we reckon he deserves it for being a good boy and a cake would make him fat.

I'm beginning to think that there is something wrong with my kids that they don't have diet issues. Am I doing something wrong? I'm not saying this in a bad way, I've just never had the problem.

Just thought I would impart what has happened to Hektor. Down to 12.20 kilos last week up to 12.35 kilos this week. Just a kibble or two too much and see what happens.

I'm going to follow what advice you get as well. My pug sausage weighed in at 9kg (almost 20 pounds) at the vet recently and she is 2 years. Must say I'm also a bit worried and have tried to cut back food and take her for more exercise. Like you I find it is a bit of an up and down thing as a few months back she had lost weight. Its like a seesaw.Chin up, you aren't alone!
