So I was just thinking today about how many animals we have and have come to the self diagnosis of animal hoarder. We have 2 pugs, 1 dachshund, 1 rat terrier, and 1 cat for a grand total of 5 animals in the bed every night. All our animals are well fed, groomed, loved, medicated, and spoiled.

A friend of my husband has now offered us a FREE PUG PUPPY! Who can turn down a free 8 wk old pug?

So bottom line is when does animal lover turn into an animal hoarder?

it means that without county limits on pets that a person can have as many animals as they can house, feed and. Can provide medical care for. A lady died with 100 something cats who were all well cared for and spayed/nuetered and was not considered a hoarder but another lady had 6 cats who were not so well cared for and unaltered so she WAS a hoarder.

Personally I think love should be considered a basic need also but its not.

Kristen, I'm confused.  What do you mean by medically one may have 300+  What does this mean?

The puppies will be ready in 2 weeks and the hubs and I keep discussing it. We rescued 2 dogs and had planned to adopt from then on but we're torn since we won't actually be buying this puppy and maybe saving it from mistreatment and ending up in a resue. It would be nice to train another up from a baby and not have all the health issues of our rescues.

Oh what to do?!

I think an animal hoarder has some serious insecurity issues among other things. As long as ALL your pets get to the vet for regular checkups and do regular maintenance on them like grooming, flea and tick control, heart worm prevention etc, then I think you are fine. Although I see many people that have several dogs and cats and I wonder how they can really afford that when my regular vet bills for just ONE dog is a lot, and I have insurance on him! So, bottom line, if you can afford them and they make you happy and you TAKE CARE of them, then go for it! Also, I really think you should stick to the laws of your county and only have as many as your allowed..the laws are there for a reason really. I think the laws only count for dogs, though, not cats, but I'm not sure. Good luck with your new pug puppy! Post pics!

As i agree with everyone else as long as you can take care of them most people who rescue or do fostering which alot of us do most have many in their homes and anyway there are more issues this government needs to address other than worry about how many pets you have like shutting down puppymills and making it affordable for people to get their pets fixed so we won't have so many as for these people i think they should have their pet fixed sorry to say.Good luck with that puppy.

Hi Kristen, good point, especially as my girls should be moving out the end of this year.

Oh and Gabi I think you should only count your own dogs and not your daughters because technically you are just baby sitting your grandkids! So go ahead and get another! :)

Well I'm glad I'm not in the danger zone yet! Although coming from a possible hoarder I'm not sure how serious to take it ;) but I did some research and medically you can have 300+ as long as they are healthy and not breeding(basic care).

We are allowed 4 licensed animals but I agree what they don't know won't hurt em!

As for the puppy I don't actually know the owner but somehow they have one litter and expecting another soon . Not sure how they came to have them but they aren't selling them, only giving them away so odds are we will soon have 3 pugs for the grand total of 6 animals!

My kids "kid" me about being an animal hoarder all the time.  We have 5 dogs in bed every night and 2 cats.  Cats are not in the bed..lol  We are only allowed 3 pets in our county but what they don't know won't hurt them...lol  I think as long as you can afford to take care of them properly and give them all good quality time and attention and your house doesn't look like those on TV...lol  Then you are fine, if not send free pug puppy to meeeeee..hehehehehhehe

Well where I live you can only have three to a house, so I cannot say what would make a person a hoarder, the only thing I can say is a hoarder usually cannot take care of the animals they have
