Hi everyone- I have an almost 14 year old pug that is having a lot of trouble breathing- by that I mean nasal area seems stuffed up/clogged, lungs are fine. We have tried antihistamines, nasal sprays, drops, and prenisone- he isn't improving- Does anyone have anything that has worked for their pug? I have 2 vet appts this week, but we seem to be running out of options....

The problem really is centered in his nasal passage- its "stuffed"-prenisone helps a bit, but not like I thought it would-nasal sprays, inhaler (to get steroid in there)antihistamine- all help a little but he is stuffed- may ask about trying an antifungal, but then I am out of ideas- vet wantes to do dental, but he just had one in Oct....

No I will ask him when he calls- what does that do?

Going to ask the vet about allergy testing, he is just struggling.....and I agree, my heart goes out to these older guys that are put out-they are too sweet.

Glad to hear you have a solution, Allergies, don't you just love them. Struggling with them myself presently, that and the worst moult ever and a yeast infection, I know Pug Chick has similar problems with Puga and Louie, mostly chest infections during the summer. How does someone turn in a family member just for being old. This seems to happening everywhere these days.

Thanks everyone- His pallette is good- the issue is in his nasal area, 2nd opinion vet says allergies as well as smushed face, etc. he is on antihistamine, can take 1 prednisone to get over a bad day, saline drops, nasal spray....inhaler as another way to get steroid to the source of the issue without systemic prednisone... Airconditioning even thought he weather goes down to 60's at nite- must be a bad time of year for him- he's holding his own right now..BTW- This is Bosley, I rescued he and his "mate" last Oct- someone had given them uip at age 12, foster home for a year.Bear I have had for 12 years-

Most all pugs have breathing issues that get worse with age.14 is getting up there for a pug! Also weight can be a factor, keeping the weight down can really help.Is there reverse sneezing? It could be an elongated soft palet or stononic nairs.(sp).But at his age surgery would probably not be an option. There are also bronchio dialators that can be used, ask your vet.And an oxygen tank in the end if things get that bad.How blessed for you to have had 14 years with your guy.:)

Has this just started, looking at what has been tried I am at a loss, could you give him a steam bath with something like menthol, you know hold him above a bowl of hot water with some menthol in it. If his lungs and his heart are okay, I say this because my old boy had congestive heart failure but this is not a symptom of that. I cannot think of anything else.
