Mary I know the SPCA thing well, I have done that to maybe each of my dogs at least once. I tell them you would miss me, I spoil you

Mary as he is still young it is the best time to start letting him off the leash. We had a friend who came up to a crowd of us regular dog walkers in the park with the sweetest little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel on the leash and we told her that she would be fine off with ours, so she did and hers never looked back. Mind you her Husband said to her that she did what a lot of strange people told her, she must be mad and he did not even know us, Yup, we were strange.

Diane, I don't know why we love these breeds so much! but he really makes me laugh and makes my day everytime I look into his eyes! even when he is bad I do threatin him though that I am going to take him to the SPCA and leave him there for a night or 2 so he can see what life is like without a mommy or daddy! LOL!

Mary I know exactly what you mean about the toys and the bed trick. Linus does it every night, he can get down and get it, and get back up, but no he has to cry til I get it for him

ok I am going to try the tabasco for the chewing as far as the barking while I am cooking I thought mine was the ONLY one doing this but I guess not I will try to remove him like Brent says yes pugs are smart and stubborn! Milo was never this bad but they each have their on personalities I think he has us trained to give into him like when he is playing with a toy on the bed he purposly drops it off the bed and cries untill we give in and get it for him (our bed is quite tall and he has not taken to the dog steps yet) one good thing though is I took him to the offleash area today and he stuck rt by me I was a bit worried he would run away!

Diane, that is where the hand signals come into play, if you have not used them in the past, no matter, they can still be taught. There is no credence to the saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks".

Well i have a question for Brent, what do you do when your barker is going on 12. Since she lost her hearing, she took up to barking while we eat at the dinner table. She didn't do it when she could hear, only just started it about 8 months ago. It really is annoying.

Do you give him attention when he does it? Attention can be anything from simply looking at him, touching him, or saying something to him.

Well Mary I was my own worst enemy as soon as Hektor sees me with a knife he knows I am about to start cutting what he hopes will be vegetables, he does not bark but he can just about jump as high as the work top. I must try Brent's idea but I don't really mind as I fill him up with cucumber or carrot. As for the chewing, I am afraid even though I was with him 24hours a day he still managed to chew his way through the newel post at the foot of the stairs and ruin a small chest, he has to date been the worst Pug chewer I have had. I tried the pet store chew off which did not really work, I imagine that Brent's idea of Tabasco just might, as for getting another, no that will not work the two of them will gang up and then where will you be.

Two things. If the barking is not to be allowed then trian it out. Pugs are smart (and stubborn). As soon as the barking starts tell Bentley no barking and remove him to another location. (Many ways to do it, other than this). Be firm, everytime he does it remove him from the room. He will catch on real quick, accquiring another pug is not going to stop it, he will teach the other to do the same. Stop him. Secondly, I have tried various methods with the chewing, then used something that I always have on hand, Tobasco Sauce. put it at the most targeted spots, see what happens. Mine don't chew baseboards anymore. Have already started it with Lucas. He has changed spots, more tabasco sause and now he does not even think about the bathroom molding anymore with is just as well, that particular molding was taken out of a 100 year old home that was getting torn down. I am completely involved in salvaging this kind of wood and most contractors in the area will let me know when it is available. My kitchen cabinets and China Hutch were made from such wood (Walnut). Can't find that kind of wood on the market anymore. I was having fun with you on the other comments, but if you do that with the teeth, water proof Gorrila glue works best.
