Mary, try timing him, feed him and then watch for the signs that he needs to go and then get him out pronto. He will then get the idea. I agree with Sharon and Penny about the crate being a place of safety and getting him to see it as this is half the battle. It sometimes helps to put a cover over the crate so that it is a good place to sleep. I know that when we started putting Hektor in his we did it to save our skins, he was biting us very badly and it turned out he just was not getting enough sleep, since then he used to sleep there when we went out without him, and now we can leave him safely anywhere though mostly on the sofa and come home and he is normally asleep. It will take time Bentley is only a baby yet and as I normally say Rome wasn't built in a day and babies take even longer.

Hi Mary,

Does Bentley cry when he is in the crate? If so, he is probably pooping in his crate b/c he is nervous. The crate should be Bentley's safe haven. Never punish him or yell at him and put him in the crate. Crate training takes time. Start with feeding Bentley in his crate. Every time you feed Bentley, put the food in his crate. It will teach Bentley that good things come when he is in his crate. Associating positive things to the crate will help Bentley adjust to the space. When you give him treats or bones, do so in the crate also. Hopefully over time, Bentley will be comfortable in the crate.

I hope this helps.
