I had forgotten about those glands at the rear of a pug (well inside the rear).  My Zoe didn't really seem to have the problem later in life and the other dogs haven't ever, but when Zoe was a pug and the first few years I was getting smeared by the stinky substance all the time when she would sit in my lap driving or just on the couch.  I had to remember to clean the rear before she sat with me or I'd be stinky.  Well I thought I smelled something off the other day, but tonight I had Kloe with me at a clients.  She was sitting in my lap while I was working on a computer and that wonderful smell came back to me. :)  Just need to remember to clean the butt first or turn that tail in before letting her cuddle up!!!!  Gross!!!

It never really seemed to help much for my Zoe, but maybe if you keep them expressed yourself it might help?

Cherie, my Zoe used to do this a lot.  As she got older she stopped doing it as much for some reason.  I don't think there is much you can do.  But I think they can have a problem with the glands as well, they get impacted I think they called it.  I'd have the vet take a look.

Zoey seems to have this problem and she spins on her butt all the time, not sure what she is doing there.  It's like a crazy bad habbit.  I have to figure it out as it's starting to get weird.  I did try to express them once, but was told by the groomer, you can do more damage than good, and to leave them alone, as she is only 2 yrs. old.

Di, the bran has certainly made a difference so could be worth a shot. It helps makes his poop firmer so the glands express themselves naturally. Doesn't stop the problem all together, but it does help. Glad to hear that the probl seems to quieten down with age. Around how old were your puglets when they stopped doing the "fishy" lol?

UGH!!!!!  Yes I think we have all had to deal with the dreaded glands.  Puga was really bad as a puppy but never really notice it anymore.  I have smelled the loveliness from Ginger a little bit.  Pixie and Louie don't seem to have the issue either.  Vet told me that under the best of circumstances the glands squeeze out naturally when puggy goes poopy.  If it does not take care of itself naturally that is when thy need to be expressed.  Vet showed me how to do this on Puga and I did one side in their office but have never gotten up the courage to do it at home...lol  Puga being the sweet co-operative girl that she is gave no fight.  If I ever notice that smell I just take them to the groomer to do it or have it done at next vet visit.  Oh the joys of pug ownership!   LOL  It is a small price to pay for all the other delights they bring us.

OH Konrad, I know this smell very very well, and my Lily and Lulu both had the problem, and you are right as they got older less and less was there.  I was able to clean their glands as the vet showed me how, but these two are like no way you are coming near me with those gloves and that vaseline, we know what you want to do.  Linus is the biggest whimp around and cries like a baby when i do him.  Lizzy is just sqwarmy.  I am forever cleaning the chair that we all sit in.  Yes why is it more prone in a pug then in other breeds?

Rufus has trouble with his anal glands and it is the worst smell in the world! It smells of fish with a mixture of wet metal thrown in there :O I have to have the vet "squeeze his bum" as I call it once a month. He has offered to show me how to do it but I just don't want to put my fingers in there.
Adding a bit of bran to Roo's diet helped a lot with this problem so it's something to think about if the problem persists. I give rufus bran flakes for breakfast and he doesn't "fishy" on me half as much anymore(another delightful term we use haha)
