Hey all. My black pug Buster was itching badly at his neck. Under his thick fur I found it moist and the skin thickened. We immediately shaved him from head to toe. The infection was awful. It was about 3 inches wide and the skin was darkened and there was other areas started such as his tail. We washed the areas and used those skin disinfectant wipes. I then put antibiotic ointment on the areas. I cleansed the areas of the drainage about 3 times a day and reapplied the ointment. It took about a week until it dried up and another week to heal. I can say now that he is infection free. If their had been no improvement within a few days I would have taken him to the vet instead of treating him myself. Fortunately my nursing skills worked and now he is a happy go lucky puggy again. I sure love that darn pug. Now next spring we will again shave him just to "air" his skin and prevent further problems. He loves being shaved and afterwards he felt like velvet. He also showed a lot more pleasure in being petted by closing his eyes whenever stroked.

Cindy, how is Buster doing? I hope he is not itching when his fur begins to grow in. I did know a lady who used to have her Pug's top layer taken off in the Summer, but it looked odd and I never find that it is warm enough in Scotland to need to, but I think that if this works for Buster then I certainly would continue anything that makes a dog comfortable and prevents problems,
