We have had some colitis issues lately with all 3 of the girls but mainly with Pandora and Heidi or minpin. I am home during the day with my girls and figure I am going to start preparing their food for them. I have been doing some research and I am seeing conflicting information.

Do any of you feed your pugs/pets a raw diet or a home cooked diet? I see that Brown rice, chicken, beef, and veggies seems to be the way to go but what about issues with their teeth? I guess their hard treats can combat the tartar buildup. Any information would be appreciated.

I love raw, I dont think Guinness has had any cooked food outside of the occasional brown rice after a long play day to get some extra calories in him. He's in great shape and I dont think he'll ever slow down. I know all my dogs will be raw from now on. I'll have to post a video of guinness before feeding time so you can compare how badly he wants his food compared to how much your dogs may want it.

My father wanted to try raw after seeing Guinness' pictures, His coat is glossy, hes super lean and muscular, and hes happy. My father cannot as his dog is a therapy dog and the society he is with does not allow raw diets, not even freeze dried raw. However, they did put their dogs on orijen which is fantastic.

Wow Helena I am really glad to hear that he is doing so much better on the new diet.  I am with you on the raw, kind of not sure about the whole thing, did give it a try, but am more comfortable with what i am doing now

I am really interested in the pork, was unsure but could not see why not. Hektor is on white rice at present with an element of raw meat. I just cannot quite get to the totally raw diet, including whole chicken. I know it is supposed to be okay but I am truly nervous about it. I know one thing since he came off processed food he is acting like a puppy again, we were chasing each other round the Park yesterday and will again IF HE EVER GETS UP.

As most know i make my own food as well as their treats and mine have been healthy and happy as i'm like diane rice, your choice of veggies carrots or beans, either ground chicken or turkey or lamb cook it up chop it small the lamb there are alot og good recipes out there you just have to find what works for you.My babes can't have alot of the treats or chews as they get Bacterial infections they can't have any rawhide or jerky of any kind they can't have those greenies since we took away all that they haven't had any issues,it's like a child it's trail and error to see how things go for them.I also cook up liver for them as i also make my own liver treats and they love sweet potato, and they get yogurt everyday which they love but, like i said this is what works for mine as each pug is different like every person is different.Hope you find what works for you and you sweet babe.

I tried raw, but it just wasn't for me, so I do my own food which is chicken and brown rice or barley, carrots, sweet potatoes, and some green beans.  Sometimes I will add apples.  I also add a small amount of dry food which is all natural, I believe it is called Canidae, and as of right now my guys are very happy and healthy, even my 12 year old eats it and loves it.  I think we do have a lot on here that do the raw, so it will come down to what makes your puggie happy and healthy

I am so afraid to post this but my pugs have been eating boiled then NuWave roasted pork for over 5 years. They were allergic to everything (Saw a guy on Martha Stewart whose dog ate kangaroo!) turns out pork is the best for dogs but I'm SURE there will be a lot of people who are going to say no way.  http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2981/how-come-pet-food-nev...   Remember, the way I am cooking this it has almost no fat. I have very happy, healthy pugs who have seen a vet twice in their lives. They also get gluten-free cookies that i make, rice (red, brown, white, black) peas, carrots and beef liver, which they really adore. We have had our issues with colitis: sure glad I didn't listen to the vet. Anytime I change the way I cook the pork they suffer. I can't broil or "fry" in a pan. Only boil and NuWave. These pugs are worth all the effort and dogs have never been sicker since we "invented" dog food. Bull! Who knows how we got the dog to stick by our sides in the first place? We threw the food scraps out of our houses and the dogs came around. I'm reading   "Inside of a Dog" , what dogs see, smell and know by Alexandra Horowitz, it WILL change how you view your dog/s!

When you can't travel with your pugs ...

When traveling and can't take our babies with us we used to have a friend stay with them at the house. She let us know that they spend most of their time by the front door waiting for mama to come home. That broke my heart. Velma even tries to escape to "look for mama." One time it was many hours before she was found -- so so scary. Now we leave the girls at a friends house who has a doggie daycare. They do okay there but really keep to themselves/huddle together in a corner. I'm so conflicted.…See More
