Social network for pugs and their people.
Hektor and I live in Scotland, I love Pugslife and have made so many friends here from all over the world. I know I have not been participating as fully in the life of this site this year as fully as I would like, and hope after September to do so. Why September you may ask, well for those who do not know, and I imagine that many of you do not. Scotland holds a Referendum to decide whether we will remain as part of the United Kingdom or become as we were formerly an independent political entity.
A little history, in 1707 Scotland joined in a Union with England and the Principality of Wales, but truly it was simply England and Scotland as the Kingdoms in a political Union, we were already united by the King of Scots becoming the heir to the vacant English throne which happened in 1603, which meant we were independently political for 104 years. The Union was not popular but people just got on with it, oh there were many occasions when people tried to end it. Do not consider the risings of 1715 and 1745 as part of that, this was merely the disenfranchising of one King with another. It was in the 19th and 20th Centuries which brought most of the arguing about not being ruled from Westminster, aka Parliament in London, we were nearly there just before the sart of World War 1. We in Scotland have a different legal system, education system, even the Church is different. The Established Church in England is Episcopalian and the Church of Scotland is Calvinist.
Now if we go further back, to the last war of Independence which was in the late 13th early 14th Century when we finally won our independence back from the machinations of Edward the First of England, our then King Robert Bruce, did something quite out of keeping for the time, he made the People of Scotland Sovereign over Parliament which is something precious. It means we have final say. Therefore we are, and I mean ALL the people who live in Scotland will be asked on the 18th of September whether Scotland should be an Independent Country regardless of where they come from. Our opponents have said that we of the YES campaign are narrow minded Nationalists, does it sound like that. We have English people, Americans, French, Polish, Pakistani etc all campaigning.
As have I, so I just want you to know I will be back helping Julie and Di hand out the welcome mat soon, only 71 days to go.
