Ok, I know all pugs have this problem.  reverse sneezing or breath funny.  Baby had an x-ray done years ago and show that his wind pipe is quite flat.  We were living in Asia then and I was advised not to take the risk for surgery to fix the problem cuz there was no successful case there.  I thought maybe we will not play too rough with him from then on.  Now we are in Canada for the last 6 years and this problem didn't seem to bother me until recently.  He started to breath very shortly and I can't even play with him, before he even gets excited he starts to "cough" like there is something in his throat, I don't even know the right word to describe it.  I am just wondering if your pug has the same problem, should I be looking at the flat wind pipe or is he just getting old?  And if it is the wind pipe that causes this, have anyone of them out there have had your pug went under the surgery?   He is 9 years old and I am worried about his age as well.  - concerned and worried pug mom.

My Sassy, who is 10, has those backward sneezes.  We call them the "snarkies", and then we pet her a talk softly.  She tends to get all wound up about it, probably because she is short of breath.  My 13 year old Buffy has them briefly; neither have had an xray to check their trachs.

I will say Vicki that I had my old dog Henry operated on at age 10. At the same age as Baby he developed prostate trouble which required castration to fix. I foolishly put of surgery for a year by having him chemically castrated but once the year was up, the problem came back and surgery had to be done. He was fine, and I would say that anaesthesia has improved since then, that was in 1999.  I have certainly noticed a difference because the twice that Hektor was put under for his x-rays he woke up without the cough that the other two used to get. So best of luck, I think that if surgery is required they will take the greatest of care of him. Helena

Thank you for all your concern and advise.  I will definitely talk to some vets and find out what it is and if they can fix it.  Will keep you posted.  Thanks again.

It sounds like it could be an elongated soft palate.  It is very common with Pugs and many need corrective surgery for it.  One vet recommended it for my baby, while another said it wasn't that bad.  I would speak with a few different vets for several opinions.  I understand your concern with age, but it can be done.  Just try to make him as comfortable as possible, try not to keep him in heat, don't let him over exert himself and use a harness vs. a collar (eliminating pressure on the neck).  Good luck and I hope your baby is able to get the help he needs.

Did you find a vet in Canada, and if so what did they say?  Also did you try and look this up on the web and see what you could find?  I have not heard of this myself, so sorry I cannot give you an advice, but would be very interested in what you do find out.  Good Luck

"Update my boy milo still has them and is 10 soon. Raw diet calms the severity and frequency but he had one just now. He spaced out, got dizzy and flopped over onto his side. Went rigid for ten seconds and back to normal"
