Casper has arthritis in her elbows, and degerative disc disease in her neck. cushings disease from long term steroid therapy for the neck and elbow arthritis (yes a catch 22!) For Casper Cushings caused compromised liver function which caused degeneration in her eye health, thicking of the stomach and muscle weakness and atrophy in her hind quarters. She fell of the bed and hurt her neck back in 2005 and that's when she needed the steroid to help with the inflammation. The Ortho wanted her off of it as soon as possible but she would limp terribly without it and on it, it stopped all re-occurrences of mast cell. She actually had 3 spots I was monitoring when the accident happened and when she started on the steroid they immediately shrank and went away. When I tried to wean her off of it they would re-appear. so I kept her on a very low dose thinking I could keep her mobile and mast cell free.
This past summer I tried again to wean her off of it as she was progressively getting the above mentioned cushings symptoms with that cumulative/continued steroid and her liver values were registering high and she was getting random infections. Within a week of weaning her off, she had 3 mast cells appear and burst.
I took them off with the blood worm paste (as I had previously) and restarted her on the low dose of steroids again.
That is how I finally found Dr Marty and his integrative medicine approach. He says he has to stabilize her and wean her off of the steroid and get her body balanced and her liver to be functioning higher so that she can hopefully re-gain strength in her hind quarters and increase her mobility as well as RESOLVE the chronic histamine inflammation which is the cause of the mast cell disease.
Dr Marty has a vitamin C therapy in conjunction with a specifically targeted supplement therapy which he says has resolved Mast cell Disease in 85% of his patients. Since Casper has only had mast Cells that were not cancerous (all graded as suspicious or grade zero) I'm hopeful that she will finally find the right balance. I only wish I could have found him earlier. I can't tell how often I would be up late at night searching the web, trying every supplement, detox vitamin therapy anyone recommended. This is the only Dr I have met that has actual results and 30 years of data and experience to back him up. He has his own SIRIUS RADIO SHOW has been a reoccurring guest on the Today show, Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey shows.
Here is the list of supplements she is currently taking. Please note that these supplements were prescribed based on her blood work and specific to her cushings disease. The supplements may change once there is progress and he feels he can start addressing the arthritis and mast cell if needed. One therapy we discussed is Vitamin C IV therapy. (I think its a 3 day treatment of Vitamin C IV so she would have to board with his office for this) I'm hopeful she will respond with out having to do this.
