I need help .....

I am determine to learn to clip my little pugs toe nails myself.   As you can imagine my little M&Ms do not like this grooming task.  Little Matilda especially gets upset everytime I try.  Don't laugh .... I even tried that battery operated doggie nail sander that was sold on T.V.( I actually found a brand new one at Goodwill for $5.00 .... well of course, they didn't like it .... the sound alone set them into fear fits.   I was able to return it and get my money back.)

I have tried giving a treat while clipping ... doesn't work too well.  I need another set of hands to help hold the pug, the paw, the clippers and the treat. LOL

Can anyone give me tips on how you get this little necessary task done for your pug.  Also how often should thier nails be clipped?  I have been trying to clip their nails every 2 weeks.

Will have to get some of  that Quick Stop. have never heard of it before, but as of yet we have not cut too deep (NOTE to self: Add Quick Stop to Shini's diaper bag as well LOL). We use the clippers that have the safety feature on them for as Di was saying, it is hard to see on the black pugs black nails.

That is true, it has happened to me, and I do have the quick stop, a must have

One other thing I for got you need to get some Quick Stop from the pet supply stores. Its a powder that will stop any bleeding from the nails and no matter how careful you are you will make them bleed at some point.

Your right Di you do have to take a little at a time and must learn to see the quick of the nail especially on the black nails. I was lucky enough to be able to practice on my bostons clear nails.Tracey wouldn't let me cut the Pug nails because they are all black and hard to handle. I had several close up pictures of the nails but my camera settings were wrong and they didn't turn out.

Well I like the pictures, but that does not work for me.  I can clip, but it is hard, and your really need to be careful.  Mine both have black nails, you are a lucky pug person if you have clear pug nails.  Anyway their quicks are right there, so you must only take a little off at a time.  It is a fight in our house, but it can be done, just be patient.

Mike&Cher, she does make it look easy but as you probably know IT IS NOT. I always cave in to thier Puggy cuteness and think I'm hurting them. So I'm not much help.LOL

Tracey likes the kind she is using here. I know there are several styles out there and i would say it would be a trial and error thing you just have to find what fits for you. glad it helped and its good to start them early and play with thier feet as often as you can.

Thank you...thank you.... thank you!

Steven and Tracey your photos and description on this blog is very helpful.  I appreciate you both taking the  time to help me.

Now I know I was not holding them right.  Since they are puppies ... I am using finger nail clippers to do their nails.  When they get older what kind of doggie nail clipper should I buy?

Thanks so much for your help.

WOW Steven that is awesome. You & Tracey should make a video for Youtube, that is absolutely amazing & the way Tracey does it, makes it looks so simple. Very impressed here Tracey!

Sharon, Tracey was nice enough to let me take some pics of her trimming DeeOgee's nails. Below are a series of pics depicting the different holds she has to use. With Pugs its almost more of a wrestling match than a nail trim.

Sharon, pugs tire out easily u have to fight most of them. for me it is the easiest to sit on the floor and use my legs to hold them down. if you find it easier to stand while doing it, get a table of some kind to put them on. while on the ground, they are in control. you cant give up! or you will never be able to do it. 3 of my pugs are horrible. i hold there heads down with my left leg and the back end with my right leg. front feet between my legs and rear legs on right side of right leg. the only other advice i can give is practice practice practice. every 2 weeks is ideal. or you can go to a groom shop and ask them to show you how they do it. it is very hard to describe this process. i hope the pics help and just remember dont give up!!!!!!!!!
