From my experience with pugs, both black and fawn, I've seen some misinformation out there, and I would like to set the record straight.

I have heard that female pugs are more standoffish than males. This depends. Females are more attached to men, than women. Male pugs like the ladies. If the person observing is a man, they would say that male pugs are more standoffish than females, and vice-versa.

On the issue of shedding...Yes, ALL pugs shed, but from my experience, Black Pugs shed LESS than fawns. Why, I don't know. But I can have one of my black beauties on me, and when she gets off, I have a smattering of fur on my clothing. But, when my fawn does...Well, I get mistaken for Sasquatch, from all of the fawn fur adorning my body.

Just my two cents, adjusted for inflation.

Well I have had three boys all who really liked or like the ladies. Hektor goes so far that we have to have a female Vet for preference but when it comes to the family he will sleep with anyone. He likes my Husband and always eats his bone on his lap. He cuddles with me. My previous two would sit beside me preferably. This year Hektor has only shed once and this is now. We have had a very cool summer and the fact that he had oil with his food he just has not done the normal two period shed. I should say all of mine have been fawns, both Henry and Hektor seem to have double coats, Angus had a single silky coat. Hektor has two beds beside our bed, one either side, depending on how he is feeling he will start in one and move around all night till he usually ends up by my Husband in the morning.

My guy Dudley prefers me over my wife for sure. I'm the one who he'll follow around the house but if he's in the bed with us, he has no preference who he ends up snuggling up to. I'm also the one who made sure that when we adopted Dudley that I was his Alpha. I fed him, bathed him, groomed him, walked him, and I took him with me just about everywhere I was allowed to. I made it a point to show him I was his human. I did this for the main reason of his previous owner who trained him, and really showed him the most love in his past life was a woman. Dudley is my Dog, my wife has her teacup yorkie and the yorkie gravitates to her.

As for what gender he prefers,,,,,,, well, Dudley is very timid with new people but not so much kids. He doesn't seem to have a gender preference.

My male pug, Tin Tin's best bud and preference is he/she who has the food LOL!!! But, jokes apart, he is quite a mamma's boy!! Prefers to cuddle at my feet on our bed and eats whatever I eat - even if he doesnt like something I am eating, forces himself to try it out. But for some things he only wants my husband - eg. all-boy games, nibbling at his ear etc. And if I am  not around, Tin Tin wastes no time in making my husband his whole and sole :-)

My statements are not chiseled in stone, your mileage may vary. But in a LOT of Pug information sites, they state that All pugs shed like mad, and the stats show that Blacks in general are lower shedding animals. Boy vs Girl pug, Well, we all know that pugs are individuals, and the way they were socialized has a lot to do with who is the "Alpha" dog in the family. If all things are equal, the females will gravitate towards men, and the males towards women...** If your Pug begins to wear rainbow colors, and only wants to drink Evian, well, you have the rare Gay Pug, and all bets are off. :)

My black pug Dali sheds way more than the three fawns put together! Tia my female prefers me to anyone else .  Disco the male goes for the kids over me.  Bugsy the male will snuggle indiscriminately with anyone - no preferences.   With all my fosters I never noticed a specific pattern with male/female preference.

I will agree with the shedding my female is black and sheds less then my silver male I also had a male black boy and he shed less as well as far as standoffish my female likes males and females but deff sleeps and is attached to me

Now for my two  I think it's just amatter of the pugs personality and thier people.  I have 4 pugs, 3 female and 1 male.  Youngest female is a major mamas girl.  Screams bloody murder when she doesn't know where I am or I leave her.  Always sits by me and no one else.  Now my male is also a mamas boy but will occasionally hang with dad.  Black female is a major daddy's girl but loves me two.  Sleeps next to her daddy and only next to me if dad is gone.  Lastly the other female was a real mama's girl when younger but now will flip back and forth. But I prefer to think she prefers  Fawns most definitely shed MORE!!!!!

I have to disagree on the females liking men better.I have 3 girl pugs and 3 human men in my house.None of my girls like the men as much as they like me.They never go to them ever unless i go sit by them first. And when im gone overnight or two.they wont sleep with my husband either they will go downstairs and sleep with one of ny boys. But yes my fawn sheds buckets compared to my blacks. Each household is different for sure.I also find at the pug meetups once a month that there is no difference to people there with all the pugs together, however im sure its a different story at home.')

I would say I agree with your men vs women comment.  My boy loves me, and cannot stand to be away from me.  My girl is like who really cares, unless it is food time.  Mine shed about the same, but that might be because my black girl has some skin problems which I think makes her shed more.  As for personallity, they are most different, black girl being a holy terror, while fawn boy is more mellow.  Just my two cents  HEHE

I don't know about who is more standoffish but I do agree with the male dogs preferring ladies! My rufus is a total mamma's boy and I wouldn't have it any other way. Yes he loves his dad, but it is always me he comes to for food, love, affection and play time. Dad gets a look in if I am not around lol.
Fawns do shed worse than blacks as fawns are double coated and lose hair all year round. A lady down the street from us has a black pug and he doesn't seem to cover you in half as much hair as rufus does, takes a lot of cleaning and grooming with a fawn!
