I feel like the worst mom in the world Bentley has been barking outside ALOT! so i borrowed a bark collar I put it on him and sure enough he barked out side and a warning came then barked again and a shock came! he freaked out and screamed at the top of his lungs I tried to catch him but he kept running and crying and the collar keep shocking him I finally caught hime and took it off straight away (crying myself all this time) and hugged him and mommy sorry! tonight he is freaked out at everything! and sticks by me like glue I hope it didn't traumatize him :( turns out the collar is for bigger dogs not little ones I could have died!

We had a discussion about anti bark collars at Hektor's obedience class on Saturday. Now here in Britain we have two Devolved Governments who decide what is appropriate in Scotland and Wales. The Welsh Assembly has banned electric shock collars and you cannot use them in Wales. My Behaviourist was saying that in the right hands and as a last resort, aka you could lose your dog,it could be shot or put down for inappropriate behaviour like sheep chasing. She feels they have their place. What she was showing us was the one which puff air under the chin and as Sophie says the citronella spray as well. As I said my solution for Hektor and his barking, we have a small spray which contains water, but you have to be there and use it immediately, no use in the garden. If he goes out and barks continuously he comes in end of story.

I am going to try a sonic one which just makes a noise only dogs can hear we have a hand held one which works quite well

Well I was going to the collar next if the thing that Terri has does not work. The collar I was going to look into is like what Helena is talking about, only I think does spray something at them.

Wow, this is why you shouldn't use shock collars. Unnecessary and cruel. If anyone does use them it should be a last resort thing. (If any sort of training does not work eg: Training him to be quiet on command) Even then i don't agree with them. There is a citronella spray collar for barking.

Poor Mary, on one hand I feel your mortification but at the same time the image conjured by your description is hilarious. Sorry I know it wasn't funny and you were quite rightly upset. I know how bad the barking can be and mistakes happen. Terri has had excellent results from Bark Off, worth a try. Thanks for sharing the story too, as I didn't know anything about bark collars and might even have done the same myself.

Mary you can get a collar that puffs air in their faces. a bit kinder. I have the same problem with Hektor, he gets offended at every living thing that is anywhere near his garden. Never tried anything but boy he loves coming in as he gets a treat.

Bentley has a collar on all the time he does not seem afraid of it (I use a harness to walk) I am better about the situation now! but really felt bad at the time now he is curled up on me and fine I guess i just worry because I heard bark collars can cause siezures? and with Milo's health (god rest his soul) just want to be carefull
