My pug Cherrylynn loves to go for a car ride...but when i put her in the passanger seat, she wont sit down and she cries-whines loudly the whole time. I constantly have to push her off my right arm back into her seat. I tried the seatbelt stuff and she cried even louder. She has always done this since the day I got her. But lately it seems she is getting worse. I asked the vet what to do and he told me to give her Dramamine original formula 1-2 tablets. They have failed to help. She wants to be sitting on me when I drive (but i have NEVER let her do that!) I just can't figure out what is making her so determined to do something that has never ever worked before! I have tried bringing her bones and toys with us but she doesnt want any part of it! Anyone have any ideas on what to do?

Hi Heather,

My pug also loves to ride in the car. She knows when i grab my purse and jug of water that im headed out and she is supposed to go with me. She to loves to get next to me or on top of me when I'm driving. she will use her paw and actually start scratching my right arm while I'm driving so i have to push her over to the passenger seat. So i started putting a leash on her and sit her beside me. She barks at everything and whines at things especally people walking on the street. I just do a little tug on her leash and it seems to snap her out of it. She is getting much better in the rides now but still whines once in a while.
We would never travel with our beloved Pug loose in the car. Hektor has a travel box and it is a good thing to encourage your dog to travel safely. If your dog is crated she will feel much safer and if she cannot see the road this might help also as seeing out can cause travel sickness. I realize that this is easier done when the dog is a puppy, our old dogs used to travel in the back seat and towards the end of their lives they were harnessed. A loose dog can kill especially if you brake sharply, as in kill you and kill the dog.
I have a pug who cries the whole ride as well. If I dont watch her she will chew up everything. I already have 2 door locks chewed up on my new car. She also cries and yells anytime shes excited... getting her leash on, going to the park, seeing other dogs, seeing people- shes crazy! I have recently discovered if I take her for a long walk before going for a ride she will calm down. Maybe that will help Cherrylynn.

this product (if you can see it) is a lifesaver for us and our pugs. we use it with the link below for 2 pugs, they are both crazy, it keeps them safe, happy and I can drive safely. It was about a $60-$90 investment well worth every penny. Good luck. My girl is a cryer too. I find that more frequent trips in the car help, as does making sure she handles her business before getting in car (pee/poo) frequent stops are required for long trips too.
