Hi everyone,

I am facing a constant struggle when it comes to cutting Tanks nails. They grow so fast that if I don't cut them at least once a week they become painfully long and sharp and I end up scratched all over when Tank gets excited and playful.

I've been bringing him to the vet for nail clipping every week so far but it costs me $11.00 per time. I've tried putting him on my washing machine (this is where I put him when I dry him off after showers, clean his folds, brush him etc.. as he doesn't really move around that high up.) but he keeps pulling his paw away from me whenever I get started.

How do you all keep the nails short on your pugs? Any advice?

I use the Pedi-Paws on mine as they seem to fall asleep as i'm doing it lol,as i do all my own grooming myself, hope this helps.

Sharon, don't know how easy it would be for you to get this but you can get a file for filling dogs nails. they have a v shape and once they get used to it it is safer than cutting, you could try him with some rough sandpaper also, just a little bit in your hand. Julie's idea is a good one too.

Mine has no long nails but then he is out on rough ground all the time and in your part of the world this is pretty difficult. I know that once my previous two got beyond the walking and they do then we were faced with having to cut the nails, hence the file, Angus had black nails and even the Vet baulked at it.

Thanks for the tips ladies.

Julie, what is Pedi-Paws? I've never heard of that before?

Sharon if you google them I am sure they have them on Amazon, really need Julie but I think it is a electric nail file sort of thing actually a nail grinder/trimmer, get them on ebay, here is the link.

Ahah, found them.. Can't order from Amazon as I live in the UAE, but was able to order them from another website (desertcart.com) that has the same/similar items. Fingers crossed that it'll work.

Hope it works I know what a pain it can be, Angus hated his feet touched so get going with Tank early. Hektor is not over fond either so I hate to think what I will end up doing when his walking days are done, hopefully not for a while. He was out chasing crows last night, running like a greyhound, came back completely satisfied with himself, as he ha barked at them and they were not paying any attention so off he went. Amazing what a few pounds off makes, he used to do this all of the time when he was younger.

I've been keeping Tank pretty slim and trim so he's got lots of energy, unfortunately we're surrounded by sand and it doesn't help shave down the nails like pavement does (the nails of the outdoor dogs and my parents house are always short because of the pavement and their constant digging). I guess if I start now (he's 7 months), I should be able to get him used to it... hopefully..

That is the trouble with Pugs, they do not dig, at least none of mine have. Presently we have a small hole in our fence and my friend who used to live next door in my old house is worried he might get out, told her not to worry, he never has bothered. Now what he does bother about is who is over the fence, boy can he bark. Yes Pavement works a treat on the nails but I can see the problem with sand and heat as well not the sort of weather for hard exercise. I have always been aware that my little man, well not so little man was over weight but was trying anything and everything to stop him scratching, well seems the main one is getting him away from the last house, and keeping him away from dry food, so I was able to do away with the extras so hence he is now half the Pug he used to be.

Hahaha, that's exactly Tank! He started his barking in earnest! Every noise, every movement at he's at it! The poor neighbors must hate that he starts barking whenever they come home.. but their kids love it and always try to make extra noise so Tank will bark :$

I did notice however, that once I took him off of dry dog food and started feeding him "human" food he lost weight immediately. I make this muttloaf http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/make-and-decorate/decorating/how-t...  but omit the tomato paste and use one large ground fresh tomato instead. Oh, also I don't add the parsley either.

But I'm worried it's not enough for him and I should be giving him more than this....

Probably needs some vitamin supplements at his age,  I would give him some puppy food you trust as well as your homemade. Have a word with Julie, though she is used to feeding the old ones but she may have suggestions. Too long ago for me, I had a diet sheet from my breeder for Henry which was only of use if they were not on proprietary food. Hektor gets mostly slow cooked chicken breast which definitely seems to be getting his weight down, but boy is he going through his chew bones, these are stuffed with dried chicken and he loves them but if he discards one you know it is never going to be eaten again and it is heading for the bin.

Really looking forward to having to cut in half enough to do him 12 days whilst we go abroad on holiday, that and cooking him all his chicken and cutting up his beef in small portions. I cannot see his Home boarding lady having time to do all that, and she will soon sort him out if she gets the nonsense I am getting presently if I walk away without giving him the chews.

I was thinking the same as well. I still have lots of 'Taste of the Wild - Bison' puppy food left. I'm thinking to add half a cup to each of his 2 meals just so he gets some missing suplements. I've just heard so many bad things about dry food and the long-term results in dogs, so I wanted to change his diet as soon as possible. But I don't want him to get too thin as he seems more active the thinner he gets.

Well Uncle Hektor is chasing birds again and running about like a mad thing, he is fighting weight again so I know exactly what you mean but you do not want a fat one either in the heat.
