I got this from my vet last summer and couldn't belive what I found out as I started checking different foods.

You start out with a grade of 100

1. for every listing of "by product" subtract 10
2. for every non-specific animal source (ie: meat, poultry, meal or fat) reference subtract 10
3. if the food contains BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin subtract 10
4. for every grain "mill run" or non specific grain source subtract 5
5. if the same ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first 5 ingredients (ie: ground brown rice, brewers rice and rice flour are all the same grain) subtract 5
6. if the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less then 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3
7. if it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3
8. if it contains ground corn or whole grain corn subtract 3
9. if corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients subtract 2 more points
10. if the food contains any animal fat other then fish oil, subtract 2
11. if lamb is the only animal protain soruce ( unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources) subtract 2
12. if it contain soy or soybeans, subtract 2
13. if it contain wheat (unless you know your dog isn't allergic to wheat) subtract 2
14. if it contains beef ( unless you know your dog isn't allergic to beef) subtract 1
15. if it contains salt, subtract 1
EXTRA CREDIT:
1. if any of the meat sources are organic add 5 points
2. if the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist add 5
3. if the food is baked, not extruded add 5
4. if the food contains probiotics, add 3
5. if the food contains fruit, add 3
6. if the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains) add 3
7. if the animal sources are hormone free and antibiotic free add 2
8. if the food contains barley, add 2
9. if the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seed) add 2
10. if the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1
11. if the food contains sunflower oil, add 1
12. for every differant specific animal protein source (other then the 1st one; count chicken and chicken meal as only one protein source, but chicken and beef as 2 different source, add 1
13. if it contains gluoosamine and chondroitin, add 1
14. if the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are free of the them add 1

94-100 A 86-93 B 78-85 C 70-77 D 69 and below F

Ok you asked for it. Here are some of the dog foods on the list and there rating.: Authority Harvest Baked/116, A+, Diamond Lamb Meal and rice/92, B, Diamond Large breed 50+ formula/ 99, A, ProPlan Natural Tukey and Barley/ 103,A+, Nutrisource Lamb and Rice/87 B, Dick Van Patten's Duck and Potato/ 106 A+, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Ultra Premium/ 122 A+, Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy/ 87 B, Royal Canine Bulldog, and natural adult both are 100 A+,

Here are some of the lower rated dogfoods: Iams Lamb Meal and Rice Formula/ 73 D, Purina come and get it, Beneful, and Purina dog all rated 62 F or lower, Science Diet Advance Protein Senior and large breed puppies both rated 69 F or lower, Pet Gold Adult with Lamb and Rice/ 23 F, Diamond Maintence/ 64 F

There are more on the list I have but most of them I've never heard of. I hope this helps.

Oh and incase there are some out there that dont already know this dont feed your dog grapes. It does mean things to there kidneys. All 3 of mine love'em and we have paid dearly for that. There ok now thankgoodness but no more grapes for them.
