Lily's vet did her skin scrape test today and it showed demodex.  From what I understand it's a mite that naturally lives on the skin of all dogs and humans, however when the immune system is low it can multiply and cause the leisions she is getting.  I am so sad for her right now, the poor little girl has been through so, so much and we are just trying to get her healthy again.  He feels that the mast cell lowered her immune system and now we are having to deal with this.  Fortunatly it is not contagious to other pets or humans, so that is good.  If anyone has any experience with this please share.  We are scheduled to take her back for a treatment on Friday and then two more treatments a few weeks apart to see if he can get it under control.  : (    He said that the steriods have probably aggrivated this and because of this condition she will never be able to take any type of steriod again.  So to control her allergies now she is on missing link an omega 3 supplement and local honey once a day.  She will love the honey treat I am sure!

Oh the happy side...while we were at the vet she got to see her "boyfriend" Henry.  He is another pug that lives in our neighborhood who she loves and gets to see on an occasional walk.  We did not even know we shared the same vet, small world.

If you have anything to share that you know about demodex please do so.  Thank you!

Hi, Our previous Pug Angus had Demodex and fortunately we got it under control within six weeks and that was in 1991, so hopefully with the improvements in veterinarian medicine Lily's should be to. Knowing Pugs, I am sure that Lily will love her honey.

Timothy have Demodex too :( I took him early enough and he just had a small bald spot. He's on treatment for a month and a half now. The first treatment was just a shampoo and Oral Ivotinic medicine. It didn't completely work cause not all mites were dead on his second scrape test. Vet then RX a "dip" which is an extremely poisonous medicine but he said it works wonders. His next appointment is next Saturday so let's see. His hair grew back and his skin looks great. Im crossing my fingers, will let you know...

Lily goes in for her first treatment "dip" tomorrow. Poor little thing has to go at 9 in the morning and stay all day until 5, the vet said it's a nasty dip that they have to be really careful with and has to air dry completely and they will watch her close to keep her from licking herself afterwards. I'm going to be thinking of her all day! He wanted to do this first to see if in would be effective before doing ivotinic medication. It sounds like Timothy has had improvement after his treatment, that makes me very hopeful! Our vet said because she has the one large spot (about the size of a quarter) and then several very small spots that it may take up to three treatments and he would do one each week. I sure hope the first one does the trick though! Please keep me updated on his progress, I am so glad to hear his hair and skin are looking better.
Tracy emailed me some great information as well that I am reading about. I am looking into all options right now and would much more prefer the natural treatments other than the dips or medication but because Lily's has spread fairly quickly we are keeping her appt. tomorrow to see if we can get this under control right away.

One down, two to go! Lily's home from her treatment today! She did great. She was so ready to come home though, would not hardly calm down on the car ride. She looks good. We went for a walk when we got in to run off some of that extra energy she had built up from staying at the vet all day. Now she's pooped! Snoring on the floor.
The vet was really encouraging today, and I did speak to him about the natural treatments as well, he said absolutly, he did feel that we need to do the other two treatments as scheduled and then maintain at home for any future spots. Of course we will keep her on the omega 3 supplements and bee pollen from local honey probably forever. He said not to freak out if the patches got worse before they get better but I'm sure I WILL freak out if they do. I did not expect to see any change from just one treatment today, but she actually looks better. Once again, I am thankfull for all of your feedback!

Check on her now. Our vet explained to us how to do the "dip" and we do it ourselves but's very very tense cause we had to be soooo careful. Timmy gets a small fever every time he gets one and then he is like 30 hours all dizzy and quiet, but after that hes pretty well. Had to cancel today's vet visit but called him and he told me to keep the treatment till next Saturday...lets see. Hope Lily gets better soon....

Tammy, I have never (knock on wood) had this problem with any of my pugs. Malia when still a pup got a rash but not the same stuff. It has since gone away with just more than the usual baths with medicated shampoo. Just wanted to let you know that all of us here hope that everything will go the best way possible for you!

Ellie had this when she was a few months old and they treated her with a dip and shampoo but it came back and the vet had us give her liquid medicine each day. It again went away but has come back again, she seems to have a poor immune system and that is why she gets relapses. she gets just a little bald spot on her tail so we check her often. We have to take her back to the vets this week I will post the results. has anyone else's vet treated this with the oral medicine?
