Hi,

Pebbles has now been with us 9 months. She is great and we love her but when I walk her she barks and lunges at other dogs. Sometimes, she barks at people like my next door neighbor. She might be alright one day and then another time starts barking. I almost think she is being over protective of me since it happens a lot on leash.  I tell her to stop and she usually does after a couple of times but the lunging scares me. I think she is actually afraid of dogs but I am afraid if we have to kennel her she will not pass the temperament test. Her history from rescue was that she was bullied by a younger dog in the household and the vet advised placing her in another home. We were used to our 14 yr old pug Emma who was very peaceful and not aggressive. When I approach men or boys a lot of times she will make a huffing sound but doesn't come out in barking. I have never heard her growl. She is a sweetheart in the house and we can do anything with her with no problem. She will be 7 soon. Just wondering what I can do to modify the barking and lunging. Thanks in advance.

Donna I think she may be frightened of other dogs and because of this she wants to warn them off. I have the other sort, mine has absolutely no fear of other dogs and is a very dominant but even he feels put under pressure if the other dog is off leash and he isn't. Off leash he will deal with it.  I have a small suggestion to make which is when you see another dog coming you teach her to sit and distract her with a treat. The reason I am saying this is a lady who passes my house and who I often meet on walks has a Border Terrier who is very like Pebbles and this is what she does with hers. Helena

Thanks Helena that sounds like a good idea.
